Cervical Spine

Dr. Capel diagnosis, treats, and manages various medical conditions of the cervical spine, including; degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, or injury related cervical conditions. The cervical spine is composed of seven vertebrae (C1-C7) and is responsible for supporting the head, providing mobility, and protecting the spinal cord and nerves.

Thoracic Spine

Thoracic spine disease refers to various medical conditions that affect the thoracic spine, which is the middle portion of the spine located between the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (lower back). The thoracic spine consists of twelve vertebrae (T1-T12) and plays a crucial role in providing stability and protecting the vital organs in the chest. Dr. Winston Capel performs procedures that range from minimally invasive approaches, where smaller incisions and specialized instruments are used, to more extensive surgeries that may involve spinal fusion, the removal of damaged discs or bone, or the placement of implants or prosthetic devices to stabilize the spine.

Lumbar Spine

Lumbar spine disease refers to various medical conditions that affect the lumbar spine, which is the lower portion of the spine located in the lower back. The lumbar spine consists of five vertebrae (L1-L5) and is responsible for supporting the upper body, providing stability, and facilitating movement. Dr.. Winston Capel utilizes intraoperative scans and a technology similar to GPS, the StealthStation® surgical guidance system allows surgeons to visualize the patient’s anatomy in 3D and the placement of surgical instrumentation throughout the procedure.

SI Joint

SIJ Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: This is a broad term used to describe any condition that disrupts the normal functioning of the sacroiliac joint. The sacroiliac joint is the joint that connects the very bottom of the spine (sacrum) to the pelvis (ilium). Disease of this joint can be caused by various factors, including trauma, degenerative changes, pregnancy, infection, or inflammatory conditions. Dr. Capel's experience and expertise in SI Fusion for treatment of severe cases has allowed patients to get back to an active and healthy life.

BONE HEALTH OSTEOPOROSIS:

“Osteoporosis is responsible for an estimated two million broken bones per year, yet nearly 80 percent of older Americans who suffer bone breaks are not tested or treated for osteoporosis.”

“One in two women and up to one in four men over age 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.”

People with osteoporosis cannot feel their bones getting weaker, and many people do not know they have osteoporosis until they break a bone. People with osteoporosis most often break a bone in the hip, spine or wrist. Bones break more easily in people with osteoporosis, sometimes from simple actions such as sneezing, hugging or bumping into furniture. A broken bone in the spine can cause sharp back pain or no pain at all. Broken bones in the spine are called Vertebral Compression Fractures. They often go undiagnosed and can lead to further fractures.

The benefits of spine fusion extend beyond pain relief. By eliminating motion between problematic vertebrae, the procedure addresses underlying conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal fractures, or spinal deformities, providing lasting stability and preventing further damage.
