Cervical laminoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord in the cervical (neck) region. It is typically used to treat conditions such as cervical spinal stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck.

Unlike cervical laminectomy, which involves the removal of the lamina, cervical laminoplasty is a technique that preserves the posterior bony arch (lamina) while creating more space for the spinal cord. The procedure involves making an incision in the back of the neck and then carefully lifting and repositioning the lamina to widen the spinal canal.

During the procedure, the surgeon may also remove any bone spurs or thickened ligaments that are contributing to the compression. By creating more space in the spinal canal, cervical laminoplasty helps to alleviate the pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, relieving symptoms such as neck pain, arm pain, numbness, weakness, and difficulty with coordination or balance.

After the procedure, the lamina is secured in its new position using plates, screws, or other stabilization devices to maintain the widened spinal canal. The incision is closed, and the patient is typically monitored in the hospital for a short period before being discharged.

Recovery time after cervical laminoplasty can vary depending on the individual and the extent of the surgery. Physical therapy and rehabilitation may be recommended to help regain strength, mobility, and alleviate any remaining symptoms. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, including infection, bleeding, damage to the spinal cord or nerves, blood clots, or adverse reactions to anesthesia.
