Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Now available at Alabama Bone and Joint Clinic – Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) can help stimulate healing of damaged tissue including arthritis, joints, tendons, muscles, and ligaments using the patient’s natural healing potential.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a biologic product derived from a patient’s own blood. It has multiple applications which continue to undergo clinical investigation. A PRP injection can help stimulate healing of damaged tissue including arthritis, joints, tendons, muscles, and ligaments using the patient’s natural healing potential.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a medical treatment that involves using a concentrated form of a patient’s own blood to promote healing and tissue regeneration. It is derived from the patient’s blood, which is primarily composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are rich in growth factors and other bioactive molecules that play a crucial role in the body’s natural healing processes.

The PRP procedure typically involves the following steps:

  • Blood Collection: A small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn, similar to a routine blood test.
  • Centrifugation: The collected blood is placed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins rapidly to separate its components based on density. This process separates the plasma and platelets from the other components of the blood.
  • PRP Separation: The concentrated platelet-rich plasma is extracted from the centrifuged blood, resulting in a higher concentration of platelets than what is normally found in blood.
  • Application: The PRP is then injected or applied to the target area, such as injured tissues or joints. The growth factors and other bioactive molecules in the PRP are believed to stimulate tissue repair and regeneration.

HOW WE CAN HELP:

PRP therapy has been used in various medical fields, including orthopedics, dermatology, and sports medicine. It’s commonly used to treat conditions like:

  • Muscle and Tendon Injuries: PRP injections can be used to treat tendonitis, ligament injuries, and muscle strains.
  • Osteoarthritis: PRP injections may be used to alleviate pain and promote healing in joints affected by osteoarthritis.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE:

Good candidates for PRP treatment typically include individuals who:

  • Have specific injuries, conditions, or concerns that can benefit from tissue regeneration and healing.
  • Have tried other conservative treatments without satisfactory results.
  • Are generally healthy and not on medications that might interfere with the healing process.
  • Are not pregnant or nursing.
  • Are willing to undergo the necessary procedures and follow post-treatment care instructions.
